What a sublimation photo slate is

A photo slate (photo stone) is a plate of natural stone with one side coated in a special polymer lacquer for sublimation printing. This coating lets you transfer a photograph or any other image onto the stone just as you would onto a mug or a puzzle. The product has a natural texture and a unique look: even two stones of the same size differ slightly in edge and shade. That makes a photo slate an original souvenir for an anniversary, a wedding, a birthday or a keepsake gift for parents and colleagues.

How to choose the size and shape

• Rectangular — 15*20 and 20*30 cm. Good for portraits, landscape and group photos; the 20*30 format looks best on a wall or shelf.
• Square — 15*15 and 20*20 cm. A versatile option for social media photos, collages and logos.
• Heart-shaped — 15*15, 20*20 and 25*25 cm. A romantic gift for Valentine's Day, weddings and anniversaries.

Think about your press as well as the gift: the platen should cover the whole surface of the stone so that pressure and temperature are even. A flatbed heat press with a large enough platen is normally used for stones.

How to make a photo slate from a picture

Prepare the image in a graphics editor, print it as a mirror image on sublimation paper, fix it to the coated side of the stone with heat-resistant tape and place it in the press. A temperature of about 180–200 °C turns the ink into gas and it bonds with the polymer layer. After cooling, peel off the paper and the picture stays on the surface. Avoid uneven or damp stones and check that the paper does not shift as you load the press.
